Michael Atkinson (cello) was born in Teeside and in 1991 was awarded a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music London with Andrew Shulman. Michael subsequently studied with Melissa Phelps and Louise Hopkins. Whilst at the college Michael won most of the major cello and chamber music prizes as well as rehearsing the solo part of Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations with the English Chamber Orchestra in preparation for a performance with Rostropovich. Michael was a founder member of the Fidelio Trio which gave the UK premiere of 'Between Tides' by Takemitsu as well as touring Hong Kong, France and Ireland. Michael is a member of the BBC Symphony Orchestra with whom he has also appeared as guest principal.
